Willmore Wilderness Park
Willmore Wilderness Park is a pristine mountain wilderness of rugged forests, alpine expanses, and clear, fast-flowing rivers and streams. It is a true paradise for outdoor enthusiasts.
Because of the Park’s remoteness, travellers venturing into backcountry areas should have extensive outdoor experience or hire an experienced outfitter/guide. motorized recreation is not permitted due to the Park’s protected wilderness designation. Travel within Willmore is by foot, horse, or bicycle only.
Willmore Wilderness Park covers approximately 4,600 square kilometres (1,840 sq. mi.) and lies directly north of Jasper National Park. With fewer visitors than Jasper, Willmore offers a quieter, more remote wilderness experience.
Visitors may encounter a wide variety of wildlife and wildflowers. Wildlife sightings can include mountain goats, bighorn sheep, elk, deer, moose, caribou, wolves, coyotes, wolverines, cougars, lynx, black bears, grizzly bears, and small game. In summer, wildflowers are abundant and turn mountain meadows into a tapestry of colour.
The region also reveals an ancient natural history, with fossil evidence found throughout the area. Some of the most remarkable fossil remains are the dinosaur tracks located just north of Grande Cache.
Willmore Wilderness Park has four major staging areas that provide access to the Park:
– Sulphur Gates
– Cowlick Creek
– Berland River
– Rock Lake
Corrals are available at staging areas for those entering the Park on horseback.
